Gambling addiction: how to recognise and stop it

Priklausomybė nuo lošimų: kaip ją atpažinti ir sustabdyti

Gambling addiction (also known as ludomania, compulsive gambling, or problem gambling) is a serious impulse control disorder where a person cannot stop gambling, despite immense financial, emotional, and social losses. It's not a "weak will" or a "bad choice" – it's a brain behavior program, reinforced by dopamine loops, similar to addiction to alcohol or casino gambling.

Most people start gambling for entertainment, but some fall into casino addiction, betting addiction, or online gambling. In Lithuania, thousands of people annually fall into debt, lose families, jobs, or even contemplate suicide. But the good news is that gambling addiction treatment is possible if not just willpower, but the entire system is changed.

How to recognize gambling addiction? Key signs

Gambling addiction often develops gradually, making it difficult to realize the problem is serious at first. Here are the most common symptoms:

  • Constant preoccupation with gambling (planning, past wins, how to get money for gambling)
  • Gambling with increasingly larger sums to experience the same "thrill" (tolerance increases)
  • Unsuccessful attempts to cut back or stop gambling
  • Restlessness, anxiety, irritability when trying to stop gambling
  • Gambling to escape stress, depression, guilt, or boredom
  • Lying to loved ones about the extent of gambling or money lost
  • Borrowing money, accumulating debts, even stealing or committing fraud to get money for gambling
  • Losing relationships, job, interests – everything revolves only around gambling
  • Physical symptoms during withdrawal: insomnia, sweating, tremors, headaches

If you recognize at least 4-5 of these signs – it's a signal that betting addiction or casino addiction has already turned into an illness. The earlier you seek help – the easier it will be to get out.

Why can't you stop even when you really want to?

Gambling addiction operates through a dopamine loop, very similar to drugs:

  • Trigger (stress, boredom, advertising, illusion of winning)
  • Anticipation (dopamine surge before a bet – "this time I'll win")
  • Action (gambling)
  • Reward (winning or even losing with a "nearly won" feeling)

The brain learns: gambling = quick dopamine hit. When losing, there's a desire to "win back," and the loop intensifies. Willpower is almost helpless here because the prefrontal cortex (self-control center) weakens from stress, lack of sleep, or emotions.

Therefore, "just stop" doesn't work. The loop needs to be broken at a systemic level.

How to quit gambling? Real steps for gambling addiction treatment

How to quit gambling is not a single solution, but a systematic reprogramming of behavior. Here's what really works:

  1. Acknowledge the problem and seek professional help – contact addiction treatment centers (in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Panevėžys), psychologists or psychiatrists specializing in addictions. In Lithuania, Gamblers Anonymous groups (12-step program) operate.
  2. Cut off access to gambling – register with the Register of Persons who have Restricted their Ability to Gamble (via Electronic Government Gateway, for at least 6 months). This blocks casinos, online betting, and gambling establishments in Lithuania.
  3. Remove triggers and change your environment – delete apps, block websites (e.g., Gamban, BetBlocker), give your cards to loved ones, avoid places with gambling.
  4. Change dopamine sources – find healthy quick rewards: sports, cold shower, meditation, hobbies, friends outside of a gambling context.
  5. Therapy and treatment – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is most effective, as it changes thought patterns. Sometimes medications are prescribed (e.g., naltrexone to reduce cravings).
  6. Have a backup plan for weak moments – if an impulse arises, wait 10-30 min., call a helpline or a loved one, engage in physical activity.

Gambling addiction treatment works best when combined: blocking + therapy + support group + new habits.

Gambling addiction is not a life sentence. It's a coded behavior pattern that can be rewritten. Thousands of people in Lithuania and worldwide have climbed out of this hole – rid themselves of debt, reclaimed their families, and got their lives back.

If you recognize yourself – don't delay. Start with a small step: seek help.
